New, familiar faces win seats in Orange County

New and familiar faces will be serving on Orange County boards next year.

In the race for the District 4 seat on the Orange County School Board on Tuesday, Tina Whittington beat Orange County public school graduate O’Brian Martin, the youngest person to ever run for an elected office in the county. Whittington won with 56% of the vote to Martin’s 43%, with more than 3,000 votes cast.

Martin established himself as an early contender for the School Board seat left vacant when Chelsea Quintern resigned earlier this year citing family matters.

Whittington is executive vice president of Students for Life, an anti-abortion organization based in Fredericksburg.

“Looking forward to working for District 4 parents and families to serve on behalf of our greatest treasure, our children!” Whittington wrote on her Facebook page Tuesday evening.

In the race for the School Board’s District 1 seat, Rod Hawkins bested Sid Trimmer, 69% to 29% of the vote. Hawkins will replace Melissa Anderson on the board next year.

District 1 also will have a new supervisor on the county board. With 44% of the vote, Jason Capelle topped Andrew Fossen, with 21%, and Chris Herndon, with 33%. Capelle will replace Mark Johnson on the Board of Supervisors.

“Thank you, Orange County! I am honored to serve on the Board of Supervisors representing District 1,” Capelle posted on Facebook Tuesday night.

Crystal Hale will remain the county’s District 4 supervisor after she was reelected with 59% of the vote compared to challenger Robert Rabe II’s 40%.

Gordonsville residents also reelected Cyd Black, who ran unopposed, to Town Council.
