New roundabout under construction in Orange County

Motorists should be on the alert for changing traffic patterns coming to the intersection of U.S. 33 and Virginia Route 20 in Orange County.

Thursday night was the start of a new phase of construction on a roundabout at the intersection.

“Contract crews will complete pavement, install signage and place temporary pavement markings,” the Virginia Department of Transportation said in a statement. “The work will be performed during overnight hours. Flagging crews will be at the intersection to convert traffic to the new roundabout configuration.”

Signage will be in place for the next seven days, VDOT said.

“Drivers should reduce speed, use caution, and follow signage when traveling through the new roundabout,” the state agency added.

The roundabout, expected to improve safety and traffic flow at the intersection, is part of an ongoing $5.5 million project scheduled to wrap by Dec. 5, weather permitting.

Updates on local road conditions are regularly posted to x.com/vadotculp and facebook.com/groups/vdotculpeper. Current traffic conditions, VDOT’s statewide network of traffic cameras and other travel information are available at 511.vdot.virginia.gov or by dialing 511 from any phone in the state.
