Ruckersville man faces life behind bars after pleading guilty to child sex crimes

A Greene County man could spend the rest of his life in prison after admitting to sodomizing a child and producing child pornography.

Steven Kyle Edward Smith, a 34-year-old Ruckersville resident, pleaded guilty to four counts of producing and possessing child pornography and four counts of taking indecent liberties with a child in Greene County Circuit Court Oct. 21.

Smith was arrested in March at his temporary residence in Madison County.

“These guilty pleas come with a minimum of 20 years in prison, along with the possibility of a life sentence,” Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Adam Rhea told the court earlier this month.

Judge David Barredo silently read the memorandum of facts presented to him by Rhea while Smith rocked himself back and forth in his chair.

In exchange for admitting his guilt to the eight felony charges against him, the commonwealth agreed not to pursue additional charges.

James Herring, the defendant’s lawyer, waived the reading of the indictments against his client, which were alleged to have occurred in 2019, 2020 and 2025.

Court records show Smith was accused of two counts each of: sodomy of a chid, sexually penetrating a child with an object, filming child pornography and possessing child pornography.

“This plea means the witness does not have to testify to the horrendous acts done to them,” Barredo told the court at the end of the Oct. 21 proceedings.

Smith is to be sentenced in Greene County Circuit Court on Feb. 17 of next year.
