Scammers impersonating Charlottesville police officers

The Charlottesville Police Department says scammers are making phone calls while impersonating officers and demanding money for false claims of criminal violations.

One reported scammer impersonated Capt. Tony Newberry and demanded money from an individual for missed court dates, according to the department.

The department says that officers never call anyone to request personal information or payments of any kind.

Anyone who has received a suspicious call or believes they have been the target of a scam is urged to contact the Charlottesville Police Department at (434) 977-9041.
