A man faces multiple charges after Greene County authorities say he fled the scene when he was spotted rummaging through a vehicle that is not his in the Twin Lakes subdivision Tuesday.
John Christopher Cempre, 41, has been charged with two counts of entering another person’s vehicle without permission, one count of damaging property and one count of hit-and-run.
Greene County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Twin Lakes around 4:45 a.m. Tuesday after receiving a call from a homeowner there. The homeowner told authorities they had spotted a man rummaging through their vehicle.
“The homeowner bravely attempted to confront the suspect, who then jumped into a Toyota minivan and tried to flee but crashed shortly thereafter,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “The suspect fled on foot but was quickly apprehended by our dedicated deputies who arrived on the scene.”
The sheriff’s office said that several stolen items were recovered after Cempre was taken into custody. It did not elaborate on what or how many items were recovered.
Cempre was booked at Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange, but was later released on bond.
