Update: JMU professor facing child porn charges in Charlottesville placed on leave

A Charlottesville resident and James Madison University professor faces multiple child pornography charges.

William Chisholm Van Norman, the 68-year-old chair of Latin American and Caribbean studies at JMU, was arrested Tuesday and charged with a single count of possessing child pornography and two counts of being found in possession of child pornography after a previous infraction.

Charlottesville police said they received a tip through the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in February. The tip led police to execute a search warrant Tuesday at a residence on Bolling Avenue in the city’s Belmont neighborhood.

Van Norman was subsequently taken into custody and booked at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, where he remained as of Wednesday evening.

JMU announced after Van Norman’s arrest that he had been placed on administrative leave.
