UVa hospital recertified, remains only Level 1 trauma center in Central Virginia

University of Virginia Medical Center has been recertified as a Level 1 trauma center, making UVa’s flagship hospital in Charlottesville the only such medical facility in Central Virginia with the emergency response certification.

This marks the fourth time UVa Medical Center has received the highest possible trauma care designation from the American College of Surgeons since 2015.

The Chicago-based association conducts an independent review to ensure each hospital satisfies “national benchmarks for all aspects of trauma care, including emergency response, treatment, prevention, rehabilitation, education and research,” according to a UVa Health System statement released on Tuesday.

“This achievement underscores the skill, dedication and collaboration of every team member involved in trauma care,” outgoing UVa Medical Center CEO Wendy Horton is quoted in the statement. “That includes our board-certified trauma surgeons, surgical subspecialists and the many teams across UVA Health University Medical Center who contribute to our success.”

The commonwealth only supports four other hospitals with Level 1 trauma certification:

Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church.Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. And Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond.

According to UVa, more than 96% of the patients admitted to UVa Medical Center’s trauma unit over the past 40 years have survived.

“Our team is advancing trauma care through innovative research and evidence-based care that continuously improves outcomes for our patients,” said Kathy Baker, the hospital’s chief nursing officer. “I am so thankful for everyone here who helps University Medical Center deliver lifesaving care to patients every day.”
