Wanted Dyke man taken into custody after chase up US 29

A wanted man with a history of eluding authorities and theft faces multiple charges after fleeing a traffic stop

Saturday evening in Albemarle County.

Jeffrey Wayne Shifflett, a 58-year-old Dyke resident, has been charged with three counts of eluding law enforcement officers, three counts of driving without a license, a single count of property damage, a single count of shoplifting and additional traffic infractions not disclosed by Albemarle County police.

An Albemarle officer traveling in the area of U.S. 29 and Rio Road around 5:38 p.m. Saturday reported observing a wanted suspect, later identified as Shifflett, behind the wheel of a car with improper registration. When the officer attempted a traffic stop, Shifflett failed to yield, prompting a pursuit north on U.S. 29.

During the pursuit, officers attempted to use a “controlled maneuver” to safely bring the vehicle to a stop, according to the police department, but failed. Once they reached the Earlysville area, the suspect exited his moving vehicle and fled on foot, the police department staid.

Shifflett didn’t make it far, and police took him into custody after a short chase.

He remains in custody at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail without bond.
