Waynesboro Kiwanis gets $20K grant to fund new playground

The Kiwanis Club of Waynesboro has received a $20,000 grant from snack food company McKee Foods.

The money will go toward a playground project in the city of Waynesboro.

The nonprofit organization is raising funds for a playground in the Loth Springs area along the South River Greenway. Plans for the playground include a rubberized surface that allows wheelchair access and inclusive equipment that gives children of all abilities a chance to play.

The Kiwanis Club has set a $175,000 fundraising goal for the project, a goal it is now nearing.

“We are so appreciative of the contribution from McKee Foods and the outdoor happiness project for the new playground,” Vicky Ferreira, chair of the fundraising committee, said in a statement. “A project like the is a true community effort and we are very thankful for this contribution.’’

Collegedale, Tennessee-based McKee Foods is a privately owned, family-run company that produces snack foods, including the Little Debbie, Drake’s Cakes and Sunbelt Bakery brands. It operates a plant in nearby Stuarts Draft.

Shawn Pellington, vice president of Stuarts Draft operations for McKee Foods, added in his own statement that the playground project “is in line with the type of outdoor activities our company loves to support.”

The public can donate to the project online through the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge at community-foundation-of-the-central-blue-ridge. networkforgood.com/projects/ 250504-help-build-waynesboro-s-accessible-playground or by mailing checks to the Kiwanis Club of Waynesboro, P.O.
