West Virginia man arrested after soliciting undercover Charlottesville detective

A West Virginia man is in custody after Charlottesville police say he came to the city with the intent to defile a 14-year-old girl.

Anthony Ryan Bates, a 46-year-old resident of Martinsburg, West Virginia, has been charged with one count of using communications systems while taking indecent liberties with a minor and two counts of using communications systems to solicit a minor.

Charlottesville police say Bates contacted an undercover detective via online chat on Thursday thinking the officer was a 14-year-old girl.

Bates and the "girl" agreed to meet at the Barracks Road Shopping Center in Charlottesville on Friday "with the intent of engage in sexual activity," the police department said in a statement issued Friday.

Come Friday, Bates was arrested in the shopping center’s parking lot.

Bates remains in custody at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.
