2 Charlottesville teens arrested after 'gang-related' shooting

Two Charlottesville teenagers face criminal charges in connection with what police say was a "gang-related" shooting in neighboring Albemarle County last month.

Jakai Jermaine Mulford and Rico Lamont Walker Jr., both 18, have been taken into custody. Mulford has been charged with attempted malicious wounding and the use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and Walker with conspiracy to commit a felony.

The arrests are not related to the recent crackdown on illegal firearms in the Charlottesville area that was carried out at properties across the region this past Wednesday, according to Albemarle County police.

County police were first dispatched to reports of shots fired around 4:20 p.m. Oct. 7 in the 2300 block of Peyton Drive, an apartment-heavy residential area just north of the city.

"Upon arrival, officers located property damage and at least one bullet lodged in a fence post that surrounded a playground," the county police said in a statement issued Friday. "There were no injuries reported."

Further investigation led police to arrest Mulford and Walker.

The two remain in custody at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.

“While these arrests are unrelated to the recent search warrant operation on November 13, this is another example of how the Albemarle County Police Department is committed to seriously addressing gun violence crimes and bringing these cases forward for prosecution with urgency,” Capt. Darrell Byers with the county police department said in a statement.
