2 displaced, cat missing after house fire in southern Albemarle

Two people are without a home and a cat is missing after a Friday morning house fire in southern Albemarle County.

The fire marshal’s office is still investigating the blaze, but has said that early evidence suggests that "cooking" was the likely cause.

Career and volunteer crews with Albemarle County Fire Rescue were dispatched to the scene of a reported house fire in the 1300 block of Briery Creek Road around 10:16 a.m. Friday.

"The first apparatus arrived on the scene 14 minutes after dispatch to discover heavy smoke and fire conditions," the fire department said in a statement issued later in the day.

Only one of the two residents was home at the time of the fire, authorities said. That person was able to safely evacuate.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents. Their pet cat, however, remains missing.
