Afton resident 1 of 4 dead in Buckingham County car crash

An Afton resident was one of four people to die in a multivehicle crash on May 28 in Buckingham County.

The Virginia State Police said the accident happened just before noon when a 2012 Ford Fusion traveling south on U.S. Route 15 near the intersection of state Route 781 crossed the centerline and struck a 2022 Ford T350 headed north on Route 15. The Fusion continued in the wrong direction in the northbound lane and hit a 2021 Nissan Versa head-on. This collision caused the Versa to run off the road and overturn.

The driver of the Versa, Runping Z. Rhett, a 66-year-old Afton resident, died at the scene, as did a passenger in the Versa, 37-year-old Eric D. Truscott. Both were wearing seatbelts.

The driver of the Fusion, Erika M. Henshaw, a 77-year-old resident of Dillwyn, and the passenger, 85-year-old Alvin P. Henshaw died at the scene. Both also were wearing seatbelts.

The driver of the Ford T350 was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.
