Charlottesville man charged after police chase that injured 2 state troopers

A Charlottesville man has been charged in connection with a pursuit last week along both Interstate 81 in Augusta County and Interstate 64 in Albemarle County that left two Virginia state troopers injured.

Terrance Jones Jr., 29, has been charged with one count of eluding police and also one count of possessing drugs with intent to distribute, according to the state police. He is being held at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.

Around 11 p.m. last Friday, state troopers attempt to stop a vehicle traveling north on I-81 in Augusta County as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation conducted by the 3A Regional Drug and Gun Task Force. The state police said the driver refused to stop and a pursuit began.

That pursuit continued onto I-64, crossing into Albemarle County, where local police came in to assist.

To stop the vehicle, spike strips were deployed at mile marker 120, near the 5th Street exit just south of Charlottesville city limits. The suspect vehicle crashed after striking the spike strips. A state police vehicle following the suspect also crashed after striking the debris field.

Two troopers were injured in the crash with non-life-threatening injuries. They were released from the hospital over the course of the weekend.

Jones was found after fleeing the crash scene on foot. He was tracked down with the help of aviation and canine units. Jones was initially treated for injuries at a hospital before being taken to the jailhouse.
