Charlottesville police ID suspect in Market Street shooting

Charlottesville police have identified the man they say is behind a Sunday shooting off the city’s Downtown Mall that left one man injured.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance tracking down Gustavo Junior Laurent who is wanted on charges of malicious wounding and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

Laurent should be considered armed, police said.

Officers were patrolling the Mall near the 100 block of East Market Street around 1:38 a.m. Sunday when they were flagged down by a man who said his friend had been shot.

β€œA 33-year-old male victim was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center for treatment of a gunshot wound and is in stable condition,” the police department said in a statement issued later Sunday.

The department described the shooting as β€œan isolated incident.”

Anyone with information regarding Laurent’s whereabouts is encouraged to contact the anonymous Crime Stoppers tip line at (434) 977-4000.
