The bridge over Stillhouse Creek in Albemarle County south of Batesville is closed after crews discovered damage to one of the abutments that support the bridge deck and superstructure.
At this point, there is no timeline for the bridge’s reopening, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Effective immediately, Stillhouse Creek Road is closed to all through traffic at Miller Lake Road and Burnt Mountain Road. Private entrances on both sides of the bridge are still accessible, however.
VDOT said it received a report that damage had been spotted on the road surface near the bridge on Tuesday.
“Virginia Department of Transportation bridge inspectors found damage to one of the abutments that support the bridge deck and superstructure. That damage posed safety concerns for the traveling public, and the bridge was closed,” VDOT said in a statement issued later in the day. “A plan to repair the bridge is also being developed, but at this time there is no timeframe for repair and reopening the structure.”
