Election Day live updates from Charlottesville

It’s Election Day in America.

Follow along here for live updates from the polls to the projections in the Charlottesville area.

Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Anyone in line by 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote.

All Virginians can cast a ballot today for president, U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives and will have the chance to weigh in on a statewide referendum regarding a proposed tax exemption for the surviving spouses of soldiers killed in the line of duty.

Former President Donald Trump is running for a third time as the Republican presidential nominee, this time against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.

In the statewide Senate race, two-term incumbent Tim Kaine, a Democrat, is being challenged by Republican Hung Cao.

In the 5th Congressional District — which runs from Albemarle County to the North Carolina border and from Lynchburg to the suburbs of Richmond — Republican state Sen. John McGuire is competing against Democrat Gloria Witt. The district, reliably Republican in most election years, could take an interesting turn if supporters of incumbent Rep. Bob Good, a Republican, follow through on threats to write in his name.

In the neighboring 7th Congressional District — which is centered around Fredericksburg but stretches into Orange, Madison, Greene and Albemarle counties — Democrat Eugene Vindman faces off against Republican Derrick Anderson. If Vindman’s name sounds familiar, it is because his identical twin brother, Alexander, played a star role in the first impeachment of Trump.

The town of Scottsville finds itself in a unique situation this Election Day after not enough people formally announced their candidacies to fill the town council there.

Per Virginia Code, Scottsville voters must select six council members and one mayor to represent the town. Three of those councilors’ terms are set to expire at the end of the year, leaving three vacancies that must be filled on Election Day.

But only one of those councilors, Alex Bessette, is running for reelection. Councilor Aileen Morse is not, and neither is Councilor Edward Payne, who is instead challenging Ron Smith for his seat as mayor. Because only Bessette registered with the election office by deadline, only his name will appear in the town council section of the ballot.

Theoretically, that could mean only Bessette will be elected and the two other seats could remain vacant. But what’s far more likely, and highly rare, is a write-in candidate will win.

Voters in Albemarle County’s Rio District will be voting in a special election, deciding between two candidates for the district’s school board seat: Chuck Pace, who was appointed to the seat after Katrina Callsen was elected to the House of Delegates, and challenger Jim Dillenbeck, who was also up for the appointment but failed to garner enough support.
