Father and son drown in Lake Anna

A father and son’s body have been recovered from Lake Anna after Louisa County authorities say the pair drowned Saturday afternoon.

The two were from out of state, according to the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office. All other details regarding their identities are being withheld until next of kin can be notified, the office said.

Authorities do not suspect there was any sort of foul play, though an investigation into the deaths is ongoing.

Louisa County sheriff’s deputies and emergency crews were dispatched around 1:10 p.m. Saturday to the lake in the area of Carrs Bridge Road, where witnesses said a child was drowning.

"While en route deputies were advised that the father of the child had attempted to locate/rescue his son," the sheriff’s office said in a statement issued later in the day. "It was reported that witnesses observed the father struggling, just before losing sight of him as well. Several people went into the water in an attempt to locate them but were unsuccessful."

Divers with the sheriff’s office, Mineral Volunteer Fire Department, Lake Anna Rescue squad, Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and Spotsylvania County Fire & Rescue helped to locate and recover the bodies of both father and son.

The pair were pronounced dead at the scene and transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Richmond.

The matter is being considered an active investigation. Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office at (540) 967-1234 or the anonymous Crime Solvers tip line at (800) 346-1466.
