Police are still processing the firearms and other evidence recovered after multiple search warrants were executed in and around the cities of Charlottesville and Waynesboro on Wednesday.
"These search warrants are related to ongoing investigations into recent gun violence in the region," the Albemarle County Police Department said in a statement issued Wednesday evening.
The crackdown comes less than a month after a Charlottesville man was killed in a "gang-related" shooting at an Albemarle County apartment complex just north of city limits.
Albemarle officers worked alongside the Charlottesville Police Department and Virginia State Police to execute the warrants at multiple locations both in and around Charlottesville as well as on the other side of Afton Mountain in the city of Waynesboro.
Those locations included:
The 800 block of Hardy Drive in the city of Charlottesville. The 300 block of Riverside Avenue in Charlottesville. The 1000 block of South First Street in Charlottesville. The 100 block of Woodgate Court north of the city in Albemarle County. And the city of Waynesboro.
No specific Waynesboro addresses were provided.
"Evidence and firearms were recovered that will be processed to determine if they are related to any of the recent gun violence events in our community," the county police department said in its statement.
Albemarle County Police Chief Sean Reeves said the joint operation underscores his department’s commitment to combatting gun violence across the greater Charlottesville region.
"We are dedicated to ensuring the safety of our residents, and we will continue to work tirelessly to disrupt criminal activity as these investigations continue," Reeves said in a statement.
Charlottesville Police Chief Michael Kochis echoed those sentiments.
"Today’s operation stands as a powerful testament to the collaborative efforts among area law enforcement to combat gun violence in our region. We remain steadfast in our commitment to tirelessly pursue justice and hold accountable those who prey on our community," Kochis said in his own statement.
