A nurse at a Virginia prison was arrested last week and charged with murder in the case of a former Green Beret medic whose disappearance had baffled law enforcement and attracted national media attention.
A sheriff’s deputies in North Carolina arrested Shana Lea Cloud on Friday, charging her with first-degree murder in the death of her husband, Clinton Bonnell.
In February, deputies in North Carolina’s Cumberland County found Bonnell’s remains in a body of water by the side of a road. The body was reportedly floating in the water without arms or legs, according to a 911 call reviewed by local news stations.
The remains were matched using DNA to Bonnell, who had been the subject of a missing persons case since January.
Cloud worked as a nurse at Fluvanna Correctional Center, according to a former employee at the prison who asked not to be named. A representative for the prison system confirmed that “at one time” a person named Shana Cloud served as a nurse contractor assigned to Fluvanna by a staffing agency.
A search warrant was executed with the help of Virginia State Police at a rental home in Troy near the state prison. That search yielded evidence — including Cloud’s cellphone — that there had been a “confrontation” between Cloud and Bonnell, according to a CBS affiliate in Fayetteville.
The outlet reported that Bonnell had gone to an attorney to discuss filing for divorce the day before he disappeared. Bonnell’s new girlfriend reportedly said that he’d shared his plans with Cloud.
The next day, Bonnell disappeared, missing classes at the university where he was studying to become a physician assistant.
His disappearance triggered two different wellness checks, and Bonnell was reported as a missing person. Personal belongings with “projectile damage” and a pistol were later recovered from Bonnell’s home, according to WNCN in Raleigh, North Carolina.
On Friday, after the definitive DNA link was made, Cloud was arrested without incident, deputies said. She was charged with murder and concealment of death, a felony that could add another 24 months imprisonment if she is convicted.
Her first court appearance took place on Monday afternoon, when she was denied bond. Her lawyers declined to comment on the case.
