Gunmen in 10th & Page shooting caught on camera

Charlottesville police are asking for the public’s assistance identifying multiple suspects in a shooting earlier this month that injured one man and damaged multiple nearby residences.

Police have also identified the man struck and injured while at a playground in the city’s 10th & Page neighborhood on Oct. 19 as 25-year-old Albemarle County resident Travis Houchens Jr. Houchens, who sustained a gunshot wound to the leg during the shooting, was transported to University of Virginia Medical Center and treated for his injury.

Surveillance footage taken from the Westhaven public housing complex around 3:30 a.m. Oct. 19 shows five men arriving on the scene, in what police say was a stolen black Volvo sport utility vehicle, moments before the shooting.

“All five males are seen exiting the vehicle on Hardy Drive and approaching a neighborhood playground, where the victim and his friends were located,” the police said in a statement accompanying still images taken from the surveillance. “The suspects then open fire on the group before running back to the stolen vehicle and fleeing the area.”

In addition to Houchens, an apartment on Hardy Drive and a house on Cream Street were both struck by the gunfire. None of their residents were injured, police said.

“Based on further investigation, detectives believe the suspects were driving the stolen black Volvo in and around the city for several hours prior to and after the shooting,” according to police.

Anyone with information regarding the men or car pictured in the surveillance footage is encouraged to contact the anonymous Crime Stoppers tip line at (434) 977-4000.
