The principal of Albemarle County’s largest middle school has been charged with child abuse.
LaRuth Ensley, principal at Henley Middle School in Crozet, was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with misdemeanor assault and battery of a family member and felony child abuse resulting in serious injury. She was arraigned in Henrico County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court the following day.
While Ensley serves as principal of a school in Albemarle County, her address is listed as Glen Allen in Henrico.
Ensley was named principal of Henley in July of 2022. Previously, she served as assistant principal of Falling Creek Middle School in Chesterfield County. She has also worked in Richmond Public Schools and on the faculty of several community colleges and online universities.
“The breadth of Ms. Ensley’s instructional expertise and innovation, both at the secondary and post-high school levels, will be a significant asset for Henley,” Clare Keiser, the Albemarle school division’s assistant superintendent for organizational development and human resource leadership, said of Ensley when she was hired. “Her exceptional interpersonal skills and her passion for collaboration are a perfect fit with a learning community that cares so deeply about the academic and social and emotional development of each and every child.”
Ensley has been released from custody. She is expected to make her next appearance in court Aug. 26, less than a week after students return to class.
Albemarle County Public Schools has not made any formal or public recognition of Ensley’s arrest, but it is not uncommon for school divisions to be restricted on how they discuss personnel matters, pending litigation or criminal proceedings.
