Kohr Brothers ice cream parlor closes after fire

The Kohr Brothers ice cream parlor in Albemarle County between Charlottesville and Shadwell has closed temporarily after a fire Saturday afternoon.

There were no injuries to report at the scene.

Early evidence suggests that the fire was sparked in the attic and its cause was electrical in nature, according to the Albemarle County fire department. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Career and volunteer crews with Albemarle County Fire Rescue were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 2151 Richmond Road just east of Charlottesville around 1 p.m. Saturday.

Upon arrival, firefighters reported finding smoke coming from the building’s attic as well as a mulch fire on the premises.

Crews were able to extinguish the flames by 1:21 p.m.

"The building was occupied by two staff members at the time of the fire who were able to safely self-evacuate," the fire department said in a statement issued later in the day. "There were no injuries reported."

The Albemarle County Fire Marshal’s Office is leading the investigation into the blaze.

"The fire appears to have started in the attic and appears to be electrical in nature," the fire department said. "The incident is currently under investigation by the Albemarle County Fire Marshal’s Office."

The Kohr Brothers location will be temporarily closed due to the fire, according to the fire department. For those looking for Kohr Brothers-branded frozen custard, a second location can be found at 1881 Seminole Trail, just north of Charlottesville. That location is open from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday through Thursday and 1 to 10 p.m. on Friday.
