Motorcyclist dead after 3-vehicle crash in Augusta County

A motorcyclist was killed in a three-vehicle crash Tuesday morning in Augusta County.

The fatal accident happened at 6:25 a.m. on East Side Highway, less than a mile north of Dooms Crossing Road.

A 1994 Ford F450 was traveling north on the highway when it veered into the southbound lane and struck a southbound 2024 Kawasaki Eliminator SE head-on.

A 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt traveling south behind the motorcycle swerved to the right to avoid the initial collision and struck debris from the crash.

The motorcyclist, Terri L. Smith, a 57-year-old resident of Crimora, died at the scene. He was wearing a helmet.

The driver of the Cobalt, Julia F. Winegard, a 31-year-old resident of Grottoes, was not injured in the crash. She was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Ford, John F. Phillips, a 44-year-old resident of Broadway, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt.

The Ford also was towing a 2009 Dodge Challenger.

The Virginia State Police is investigating a mechanical issue with the Ford as a possible factor in the crash, authorities said.
