An Orange County couple has been charged with the murder of a newborn infant shortly after birth.
Sofia Dyson, a 19-year-old Locust Grove resident, stands charged with first-degree murder, defiling a corpse and conspiracy to commit a felony. James Brown, also a 19-year-old Locust Grove resident, stands charged with serving as a principal to second-degree murder, defiling a corpse and conspiracy to commit a felony.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office reported it was first made aware of the infant’s death last Saturday, but further investigation revealed the child had been born and killed sometime in July of this year.
The sheriff’s office did not say if Dyson and Brown were the parents of the child.
Dyson and Brown were arrested and booked at Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange, where they remain in custody without bond.
The investigation into the infant’s death is ongoing, the sheriff’s office said.
