Owners of Dobson Homes accused of embezzling more than $1.4M from customers

The owners of Keswick-based construction company Dobson Homes have been charged with embezzling more than $1.4 million from customers.

And Albemarle County police say they suspect the couple may have misappropriated even more funds. Authorities are asking anyone who believes they may have been targeted by the company to come forward.

Tommy and Anne Dobson were arrested last week and charged with six counts each of felony embezzlement for defrauding half a dozen customers in Albemarle County.

Police said the victims reported the Dobsons embezzled money from construction loans and collected payment from them before abandoning job sites for weeks — or never providing services at all.

“All of the victims in Albemarle County are over the age of 62 and believed to have been targeted for their vulnerability,” the police said in a statement issued Friday after the couple’s arrest. “The total amount Tommy and Anne Dobson are accused of embezzling from Albemarle County residents between October 2020 and December 2022 currently exceeds $1.4 million.”

The Dobsons were booked at Central Virginia Regional Jail in the town of Orange and later released on bond.

The Albemarle County Police Department believes there may be more victims of Dobson Homes in Albemarle County and encourages those who may have been targeted by the Dobsons to immediately contact the investigating detective at (434) 296-5807.

Dobson Homes advertises itself as a longtime family-owned and -operated business with “personalized service that is unsurpassed.”

“Tommy Dobson, his wife and children have enjoyed the rewards of living in this beautiful area for more than 20 years,” according to Dobson Homes’ own “About Us” page.
