Pets missing after Albemarle house fire

Two Albemarle County residents are safe but their pets are unaccounted for after a house fire Friday evening.

The cause of the flames has yet to be determined, but an Albemarle County Fire Marshal investigation is ongoing.

Career and volunteer crews with Albemarle County Fire Rescue were dispatched around 5:05 p.m. Friday to a reported structure fire just north of Charlottesville city limits in the 2300 block of Wakefield Road.

When firefighters first arrived they discovered smoke rising from the house’s roof, according to the fire department.

“Two occupants were home at the time of the fire and were able to evacuate safely. There were no injuries reported,” the fire department said in a statement issued later in the evening. “The residents are being assisted by the Red Cross.”

However, two cats who resided at the house remain unaccounted for, the fire department said.
