Police ID man they say is responsible for Labor Day weekend crash in Greene

The driver who struck a vehicle and hospitalized a Chesapeake family over the Labor Day weekend in Greene County has been identified.

Steven Lloyd, a 32-year-old Stanardsville resident, was behind the wheel of the 2000 Ford Ranger that struck a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe carrying the Blanco family the morning of Aug. 31, according to Virginia State Police.

State police say charges against Lloyd are pending. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and alcohol is being investigated as a factor. Lloyd also reportedly does not have car insurance, a crime in the commonwealth of Virginia.

Chris Blanco, his wife Leesa and their daughter Ava, who were all inside the Tahoe, were hospitalized at University of Virginia Medical Center with serious injuries as a result of the impact. They have since been released and are recovering back home in Chesapeake.

“Over a week ago we sat trapped and crushed in a car together literally praying to God to save us,” Leesa Blanco posted to a GoFundMe raising money to cover their hospital bills. To say we are grateful and thankful to be alive is an understatement. We give all the praise to God and will continue to praise Him even in the hard times that follow.”

As of Tuesday, tuat GoFundMe has raised nearly $40,000. Those interested in donating can do so at www.gofundme.com/f/support-the-blancos-road-to-recovery.

Lloyd was also transported to the hospital with injuries, state police said.

According to the police narrative, the collision occurred around 10:24 a.m. Aug. 31. Lloyd was traveling west in the 6700 block of Spotswood Trail near Dyke Road when he lost control of his vehicle, crossed the centerline and struck the Blancos head-on in the eastbound lane.

After striking the Blancos’ Tahoe, Lloyd’s Ranger veered back into the westbound lane where it came to a rest, police said.

The Tahoe struck a 2002 Toyota 4Runner which was parked alongside the right shoulder of the eastbound lane.

A fourth vehicle, a 2017 Kia Sorento that was traveling eastbound, sustained damage from flying debris.

The driver of the Sorento was not injured, according to state police.
