Albemarle County police are asking for the public’s assistance tracking down a man caught on camera stealing from a gas station just west of Charlottesville city limits Thursday.
Surveillance footage being circulated by police shows a shirtless man carrying a cash register till and a case of alcohol out of the station.
Officers said they responded to a reported robbery at the Shell station at 2212 Ivy Road around midnight Thursday.
“Upon arrival, the victim reported that the suspect attempted to purchase alcohol. When the suspect was advised that the clerk could not sell alcohol at the time, a physical altercation occurred and the suspect grabbed the cash register till,” police said in a statement later in the day. “During this altercation, the suspect also removed his t-shirt and face mask. The suspect exited the location with a case of alcohol and the cash register containing approximately $180 in cash.”
Police described the suspect as a 5-foot-10 Black man in his 30s weighing roughly 200 pounds. In the surveillance footage obtained by police, the man is wearing a black T-shirt, shorts and a gray mask.
