A Waynesboro man was arrested on 17 criminal charges early Sunday after a shooting and police pursuit that stretched from the city over Afton Mountain and across multiple counties.
James Williams II, a 26-year-old resident of Waynesboro, has been charged with four counts of attempted malicious wounding, four counts of discharging a firearm from a vehicle creating a risk of injury or death, four counts of maliciously shooting at an occupied vehicle, one count of eluding the police, one count of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, one count of assaulting a household member, one count of reckless driving and one count of hit-and-run.
Waynesboro police were initially notified of gunfire just before 4 a.m. Sunday in the 1200 block of Stayman Avenue.
Responding officers said they found four adults in a car headed north on South Delphine Avenue toward Main Street. Police said multiple victims informed them Williams had shot at them and pursued them.
Officers who followed Williams said they attempted to stop his vehicle but he sped away down East Main Street. Williams reportedly crashed into two signs before continuing onto Interstate 64. He collided with the guardrail along the highway but did not stop.
The pursuit continued into Nelson and Albemarle counties before ending in Fluvanna County in the 1500 block of James Madison Highway, where Williams reportedly crashed into a ditch.
Police said Williams proceeded to exit his vehicle and flee on foot before he was caught.
There were no injuries reported at the scene.
Williams remained in custody at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail as of Monday night.
Assisting the Waynesboro Police Department in the pursuit were the Virginia State Police, Albemarle County Police Department and the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office.
